Aman Kyoto, Kyoto, Japan

A Secret Garden in Takagamine

Set in a mossy forest garden at the foot of Mount Hidari Daimonji, on land a textile magnate spent decades preparing for a museum that never came. Aman built the pavilions into it and changed almost nothing else.

Onsen, and Kyoto Beyond the Gate

A hot spring bath fed from the site, black timber pavilions among the maples, and the Golden Pavilion and the northern temples a few minutes away. It is the quietest address in a city that is rarely quiet.

Rooms and Pavilions in the Garden

A minimalist ryokan aesthetic, with suites and pavilions framing the forest they sit in. Rooms are large by Kyoto standards and quiet in a way the city centre cannot manage.

The Onsen, and Getting There

A private hot spring bath drawn from the site, and an Aman Spa built around it. An hour from Osaka, ninety minutes by express train from Kansai, and a few minutes from the northern temples most visitors never reach.
