On Florida's Gulf coast, where the sunset is a nightly event and the sand is the color of sugar. St. Pete Beach runs the length of a barrier island of powder-white shoreline and warm, calm water, presided over by the Don CeSar, the 1928 pink palace that has stood on the beach for a century. A few minutes across the water, downtown St. Petersburg has become one of the coast's most engaging small cities: a walkable grid of galleries and murals, the Dalí Museum on the waterfront, Central Avenue's restaurants and rooftops, and a marina where the bay meets the pier. The Don CeSar

The Pink Palace. Built in 1928 and standing over the beach ever since, a Gatsby-era Mediterranean landmark of blush-pink stucco, white arches and red-tile turrets, directly on the Gulf.

F. Scott Fitzgerald and the Jazz Age set came for the beach and the ballrooms. When to go

November to April

The dry season, and the height of the Gulf coast: warm days, low humidity, blue water, and the calendar full. November through April is the peak, and the finest rooms sell first.

The summer is hot and green with afternoon storms, and the rates ease; hurricane season runs June to November.

Getting there

TPA or PIE

Tampa International (TPA) is about forty minutes away, with nonstops from most of the country; St. Pete–Clearwater (PIE) is closer still. No passport needed. Airport transfers we arrange on request. The Don CeSar sits on the beach; the Vinoy is downtown on the bay, about twenty minutes apart.
