Three Islands, One Journey

Tahiti, Moorea & Bora Bora

Most people fly eleven hours and stay on one island. The islands are forty minutes apart by air and they are nothing like each other, so we use all three. You land on Tahiti and sleep. Moorea is the green one, jagged and quiet and almost empty. Bora Bora is the lagoon everybody has seen a photograph of, and it earns it. Gay-owned, and welcoming to all.

The waterfront at Papeete, Tahiti
Night 1

Papeete

You arrive late, whatever route you take. One night on the Papeete waterfront so the islands start properly the next morning, with the roulottes and the market ten minutes away if you have any energy left.

The lagoon and volcanic ridge at Moorea
Nights 2–4

Moorea

Thirty minutes by air or a fast ferry from Tahiti, and a different world. Volcanic spires straight out of the water, pineapple fields up the valleys, and a lagoon shallow enough to wade. Three nights, and nobody rushes.

Overwater bungalows on the Bora Bora lagoon
Nights 5–8

Bora Bora

Four nights to finish, on the lagoon everyone pictures. Mount Otemanu on one side, a ring of motu on the other, and water in about nine colours. This is the part you do not shorten.

Where You Stay

The Garden Journey

The same three islands and the same lagoons, in garden and beachside villas rather than over the water. It is the honest way to do French Polynesia without the overwater premium, and on Bora Bora it puts you inside the St. Regis grounds for less than an overwater bungalow anywhere else.

Where You Stay

The Overwater Journey

The one people picture. An overwater bungalow on Moorea and a second on Bora Bora, both with the ladder off the deck straight into the lagoon. This is the tier most of our clients book, and Le Bora Bora is the reason: a Relais & Châteaux property with genuine overwater bungalows, and thousands less than the resorts either side of it.

On the Water

Experiences

Almost everything here happens on or in the lagoon, and very little needs booking a year ahead. These four are worth arranging before you travel. We price them once you have dates, rather than off a headline rate.

A private boat on the Bora Bora lagoon

A private boat day on the lagoon

Half or full day · private

Your own boat and skipper around the lagoon, stopping to snorkel the coral gardens and the ray shallows, with lunch on a motu. The day almost every client says was the best of the trip.

Priced on request
Coral and reef fish in the shallows

The coral gardens and the rays

Any day · off the beach

The water inside the reef is waist deep and startlingly clear. Reef sharks and rays come into the shallows off Moorea, and you can snorkel straight off the sand at every hotel here.

Priced on request
The open ocean off Moorea

Humpback whales

August to October

They come up from the Antarctic to calve in the lee of the islands, and they come close. A small boat and a guide who knows where they are is worth every franc.

Priced on request
The Belvedere lookout on Moorea

Up the Opunohu valley

Half day · 4x4

Up through the pineapple plantations to the Belvedere, where both of Moorea’s bays open below you at once. The one thing to do on the island that is not in the water.

Priced on request

Good to Know

Before you go

When to go

May to October

The dry season, cooler and far less humid, and the best of the year for being in the water. November to April is warmer and wetter, with rain that usually passes in an hour. Our pricing is built on a June departure.

Getting there

Overnight, both ways

About eleven hours from the US west coast to Papeete, longer with a connection, and almost every routing lands late. That is why a night on Tahiti opens every one of these journeys rather than a same-day island hop.

How far out

A year is comfortable

Overwater bungalows are a small fixed inventory and the good ones go early. A year ahead is comfortable, six months is tight, three is luck. Every transfer and inter-island flight is arranged for you either way.

Gay-owned · Welcoming to all

Planned by people who travel like you

We book these islands ourselves. We know which bungalow numbers face the sunset and which back onto the plant room, every rate above carries breakfast and an upgrade where one exists, and nobody hands you a voucher and wishes you luck at the airport. Tell us your month and we will price it to the dollar.

Prices are per person, double occupancy, for an eight-night journey in entry room categories, one night Tahiti, three Moorea, four Bora Bora. The Garden uses Hilton Hotel Tahiti, Hilton Moorea Lagoon Resort and The St. Regis Bora Bora Resort; The Overwater uses Hilton Hotel Tahiti, Hilton Moorea Lagoon Resort and Le Bora Bora; The Flagship uses Hilton Hotel Tahiti, Sofitel Kia Ora Moorea and Conrad Bora Bora Nui. All three include the three hotel stays with daily breakfast and Signature amenities, all inter-island flights, all boat and car transfers, and Elevida planning. International airfare and optional experiences are arranged separately. Pricing varies by travel date, room category and availability.
